Opening a personal or business bank account in Georgia is a straightforward process, whether you’re visiting in person or managing it remotely. With a reliable, efficient, and foreigner-friendly banking system, Georgia has become an attractive destination for individuals and entrepreneurs alike. Our team is experienced in helping foreign clients navigate the process of preparing and submitting the necessary documents to open personal and corporate bank accounts in Georgia.

 Opening Personal Bank Accounts

There are two ways to open a personal bank account:

  1. In-Person Account Opening
    You can visit Georgia in person to open your bank account. Only your passport is required – no additional documents are needed.
  2. Remote Account Opening (via Power of Attorney)
    You can also open an account remotely by granting us a Power of Attorney (POA). For this process, we require:
  • A notarized and apostilled (or legalized) Power of Attorney
  • A notarized and apostilled (or legalized) copy of your passport

Once we receive the original documents and submit them to the bank, the bank will make a decision regarding the account opening within 3 to 5 business days.

Opening Business Bank Accounts

Business bank accounts can also be opened in two ways:

  1. In-Person Account Opening
    If the client is present in Georgia:
  • After company registration, we will submit the necessary documents to the bank.
  • Once the account is opened, you can receive a Visa or MasterCard within 2 business days.
  1. Remote Account Opening (via Power of Attorney)
    If the client is not in Georgia:
  • After the company is registered, the company director must issue a notarized and apostilled (or legalized) Power of Attorney authorizing us to open the bank account.
  • Once we receive the original POA, we will submit the application for the business bank account.

Important Notes

  • A POA is valid for 12 months. After expiration, the bank account may be temporarily blocked. To reactivate the account, you must either:
    • Provide a new POA, or
    • Visit the bank in person (which will permanently activate the account).
  • Internet banking must be activated in person. A POA is not valid for this step. The client must also visit the bank to collect their bank card.
  • The bank may request additional information or documents at its discretion. Clients must comply with such requests.
  • In rare cases, banks may refuse to open an account based on internal compliance checks (e.g., AML/legal departments), and they are not obligated to provide a reason for the refusal.

Immigration Visa D3 for International Students in Georgia

Do You Need a D3 Visa?

If you do not hold a passport that allows visa-free travel to Georgia, you must first obtain a D3 Immigration Visa before applying for residency. You can check your eligibility for visa-free entry on the official website: Visa-Free Entry Information.

Even if you currently reside in another country that allows you to enter Georgia visa-free for up to 90 days, you may still need to obtain a D3 visa – especially if your remaining legal stay in Georgia is less than 45 days.

If your legal residency in another country allows you to travel to Georgia without a visa for up to 90 days (as outlined in Georgia’s Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons), and you have at least 45 days of legal stay remaining, you may apply for a D3 Immigration Visa from within Georgia.

Applying for the D3 Visa

Upon arrival in Georgia (or from your home country if required), you must submit a visa application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. The processing time for a D3 visa is usually about 30 calendar days.

Once your D3 visa is issued, you will be eligible to apply for a Student Residence Permit. During this period, you may either:

  • Remain in Georgia and apply as soon as the visa is granted, or
  • Leave the country and return once your visa has been approved.

Required Documents for D3 Visa Application

To apply for a D3 Visa, you will need to prepare the following documents:

  1. Original admission letter from a Georgian university
  2. Local health insurance valid in Georgia
  3. Georgian bank statement showing a minimum balance of 3,000 GEL
  4. Notarized lease agreement or accommodation letter
  5. Passport copy translated into Georgian and notarized

Once these documents are prepared and the 3,000 GEL is deposited into your Georgian bank account, the visa application can be submitted.

From D3 Visa to Student Residency

The D3 Visa is typically issued for a period of 90 days. Once received, the same set of documents can be used to apply for a Student Residence Permit, which is usually granted for one year and can be renewed throughout your study period.

To submit your residency application, you must be physically present in Georgia. The process usually includes:

  • Submitting your residency application
  • Waiting for approval (typically 35 calendar days)
  • Collecting your Temporary Residency Card (TR Card)

You’ll need to visit Georgia for 2–3 working days to submit your application. If needed, you can leave the country after submission and return later to collect your TR Card once approved. During your stay, you may provide Power of Attorney (POA) to an authorized representative, who can attend interviews on your behalf if requested by government authorities.

Georgia allows foreign citizens to apply for several types of residence permits, including the Temporary/Work Residence Permit through business, the Temporary Residence Permit, and the Permanent (Investment) Residence Permit through real estate investment. While approval is not guaranteed, these residency routes are generally viable and commonly accepted.

Immigration Visa Requirement

If you are not a holder of a visa-free passport to travel to Georgia (list here), you must first obtain an Immigration Visa (D1 or D5 type) before applying for residency.

  • A D1 Visa is required if applying for residency through business activities.
  • A D5 Visa is required if applying through property ownership.

If you legally reside in a country that allows visa-free travel to Georgia for up to 90 days (source), you may apply for the immigration visa from within Georgia—provided you have at least 45 days of legal stay remaining. Otherwise, you must apply from your country of residence before entering Georgia.

Upon arrival in Georgia and meeting the eligibility criteria, you must submit your Immigration Visa application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

  • D1 Visa processing time: approximately 30 days
  • D5 Visa processing time: approximately 10 days

Once your visa is approved, you may then proceed with your residency application.

After applying for the visa, you can either stay in Georgia until it is issued or leave and return once it’s approved to continue with your residency application.

Options for Applying for D1 or D5 Visa

Option I: Residency Through Business (D1 Visa)

  • Company registration
  • submit applications for opening bank accounts
  • Preparing all necessary documentation

Company setup options:

  1. You visit Georgia in person, or
  2. You send us a Power of Attorney, and we handle everything on your behalf.

Once your company generates a minimum turnover of 50,000 GEL, and you deposit 15,000 GEL in your personal Georgian bank account, we apply for your D1 Visa. In some cases, the 50,000 GEL turnover is not required for the D1 Visa – it is only mandatory when applying for residency.

  • The D1 Visa is valid for 90 days.
  • After that, using the same documentation, we apply for your residency permit.

Residency duration:

  • Initially issued for 6 months to 1 year.
  • Renewable for 1 to 3 years, or more—based on business activity.

Option II: Residency Through Real Estate (D5 Visa)

You purchase real estate in Georgia as an individual, with a minimum value of USD 100,000.
We prepare all documentation and apply for your D5 Visa, valid for 90 days.

Once issued, we use the same documentation to apply for your residency.

Residency duration:

  • Issued for 1 year
  • Renewable annually, as long as the investment is maintained.

Option III: Investment Residency (Permanent Residence)

You purchase real estate in Georgia as an individual, with a minimum value of USD 300,000.

  • No D5 visa is required.
  • You must be legally present in Georgia for at least one day.

Residency details:

  • Initial 5-year residence permit
  • Must maintain the investment throughout this period
  • After 5 years, you may convert it to permanent residency
  • Permanent residency requires no further renewal – only replacement of the card every 5 years

We can also assist you with real estate purchases using Power of Attorney if you’re not physically present.

General Notes

To start the process, your personal presence in Georgia is not required. We can:

  • Register a company
  • submit applications for opening bank accounts
  • Purchase property in your name
    All through a Power of Attorney

However, for residency application submission, you must be in Georgia. Plan for:

  • 2–3 working days on your first visit.
  • The full process (application, approval, and residency card collection) takes about 35 calendar days.

You can leave Georgia after applying, and return once approved. During your stay, we will obtain a Power of Attorney to represent you if the government requests an interview.

After approval, you’ll need to return for 2 working days to collect your residency card.

While Georgia’s legal residency pathways are well defined, approval is never automatic. Government agencies may request additional documentation or clarification, and even small mistakes can result in significant delays.

Pathways to Residency in Georgia
Foreign nationals can apply for the following types of residence permits in Georgia:

  • Temporary/Work Residence Permit through business activity
  • Temporary Residence Permit through real estate investment
  • Permanent (Investment) Residence Permit through high-value property investment

Here’s a breakdown of the options available to foreign applicants:

Option I: Residency Through Business Formation
This option is ideal for entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals.

Steps – We assist in:

  • Registering your company
  • submit applications for opening bank accounts
  • Preparing all required documentation

You can choose between two methods for company formation:

In-person: You travel to Georgia and complete the setup yourself.

Remote: You provide us with Power of Attorney (POA), and we complete the process on your behalf.

Residency Requirements:

  • Your company must achieve a minimum 50,000 GEL annual turnover;
  • You must deposit 15,000 GEL in your personal Georgian bank account.

Once these conditions are met, we submit your residency application.

Validity:

  • The initial permit is granted for 6 months to 1 year.
  • After renewal, it may be extended for 1 to 3 years, depending on business performance.
  • Long-term extensions (up to 12 years) are possible with consistent compliance.

Option II: Temporary Residency Through Real Estate Investment

Investment Threshold:
Purchase real estate in Georgia valued at more than 100,000 USD.

Process:

  • We handle all documentation and submit your residency application.
  • You must be the legal owner of the property as an individual (not through a company).

Residency Validity:
Permit is issued for 1 year and can be renewed annually as long as the property remains in your ownership.

Option III: Permanent Residency Through Real Estate Investment

Investment Threshold:
You purchase real estate in Georgia as an individual, with a minimum value of USD 300,000.

You must be legally present in Georgia for at least one day.

Residency details: 

  • Initial 5-year residence permit
  • Must maintain the investment throughout this period
  • After 5 years, you may convert it to permanent residency
  • Permanent residency requires no further renewal – only replacement of the card every 5 years

Application Logistics and Timeline
You do not need to be in Georgia to begin the process. Through Power of Attorney, we can:

  • Establish your company
  • submit applications for opening bank accounts
  • Purchase property on your behalf

However, you must be physically present in Georgia for the final steps of the residency process:

  • Initial visit: Minimum 2-3 working days to submit the application and handle biometric data
  • Total processing time: Approximately 35 calendar days
  • You may leave the country after submission and return later to collect your residency card
  • Final visit (after approval): At least 2 working days to receive your residence card
